Peace on Earth was inspired by my ultimate hope. There is so much pain in this world. So much struggle and sadness. So much confusion and anger. So much gluttony and greed. I wanted to paint a piece featuring the most beautiful things to represent this hope for peace. When I think about Peace on Earth, I shift my perspective from all the horrific things happening to the good that's happening. I feel a sense of peace when I do that, and hopefully this piece will brighten walls and bring a sense of goodness that exists in all of us. Peace on Earth is everywhere if we look.
I painted the Mourning Dove because it's native to Montana, has a gentle nature, and makes a soft cooing sound. The Mourning Dove symbolizes peace, love, hope, and spiritual guidance. I painted three of them to represent the past, present, and future. I hope we can learn from our past, live mindfully in the present, and make decisions based on the good of the whole for the future.
I also painted honeysuckles, lilacs, and pussy willows because those were my favorite childhood plants. I remember running through the woods, being so excited to find honeysuckles and always stopping to take a tiny, delicate sip of the sweet nectar. Honeysuckles symbolize nostalgic, happy times and the joy of stopping to notice the small things. I've always been fascinated by Pussy Willows because of their hardiness and stuffed animal-like softness. They symbolize renewal and hope, strength and childlike wonder. Lilacs are imprinted in my memory for their incredible sweet fragrance and for how they warm any home with their contagious scent. My grandmother always had lilacs filling her space. When I smell them, I think of her and all the wisdom she left behind. Lilacs symbolize protection, magical hope, and ancestral wisdom.
Peace on Earth seems unattainable, and probably is, but the feeling of peace is absolutely attainable within each of us if we look. What would this world feel like if every human took a moment, that hopefully would turn into many moments, and focused on the good? Those beautiful, nostalgic things that bring peace to our hearts. I wonder what that would be like.
