The Gift is dedicated to my father. My dad grew up in his beloved Whitefish, Montana, a small town. He's watched it drastically change over his life, but he still holds on to his secret spots. My dad has his spots for fishing, hunting, mushroom picking, and Huckleberry picking. My dad knows his home and where to find the best of nature's gifts. I painted a Bull Trout going after a Cutthroat Trout because of my favorite childhood fishing story with my dad. I had my typical bobber-and-worm setup on my little fishing pole. I felt a tug and jerked the line as my dad taught me. I had it and began to reel. It was easy to reel in at first, and then the fish felt feisty and much stronger as I cranked the line. My dad helped me reel it in, only to realize I caught two fish on one hook! I caught the little fish, and the big fish saw a snack and went for it. I'll never forget how proud I felt. Outfishing my dad isn't typical, so that was a pretty awesome day. I painted one of my dad's secret spots, which I can't tell you about, with two native fish found in that lake, along with a Bull Elk, Bald Eagle, Morel Mushrooms, Rocky Mountain Maple, and Huckleberries. Thank you, Dad, for all you've given your family and for all the stories and insights into the best places around our beautiful, recreationally rich home.
